What Are The Risks Of A PermWhat Are The Risks Of A Perm
May, 26 2005

Perm products effect an opening of the sulphuric (disulphide) bridges in the hair keratin. The hair is softened and can thus be shaped on the perm curler. After completion of the development time, it is stabilized in its new shape by a rebuilding (neutralization) of the previously-dissolved disulphide bridges.

As a rule, an oxidation agent, usually hydrogen peroxide, is used for this purpose.

Unsatisfactory results due to residues
Residues of reduction and/or oxidation agents often remain in the hair and have a negative effect on its structure. The results are:
_ A reduction in the bounce of the curl (creeping reduction)
_ Irritation or hyper-sensitivity of the scalp
_ Difficult to comb and lacking shine due to the swelling effect of the alkali residue
_ A lightening of the hair (creeping oxidation)
_ Uneven curl result due to uneven structure of the hair
_ Lack of elasticity
_ Reduced style durability
_ Poor appearance of the hair in general.

Frizzy hair due to incorrect application If the perm solution used is too strong, the development time too long or the temperature too high, the hair swells to an extreme. Despite a good neutraliser, this kind of damage cannot be reversed. The result:
warping of the surface of the hair, a typical characteristic of the use of the incorrect perm solution. Frizzy hair: Clearly-visible warping on the surface of the hair as a result of extreme swelling. The hair loses it shine and is more difficult to comb.

Perm damage due to inadequate interval between lightening and perming: The cuticle becomes detached from the cortex. The result is decreased springiness. The hair looks dull.

Damage to hair due to inadequate interval
between lightening and perming The stress put on the cuticle layer by both treatments damages it so badly that it begins to separate from the cortex. This can result in the complete separation of the cuticle layer.
