Cut It Out Releases New Poster For SalonsCut It Out Releases New Poster For Salons
February, 16 2007

CUT IT OUT, a program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund, has released a new poster designed to encourage clients and colleagues to seek help if they need it. Each day, four women in the United States are murdered by an intimate male partner. Every 15 seconds, a woman is battered.

CUT IT OUT, a partnership of Clairol Professional, the National Cosmetology Association and Southern Living AT HOME, builds awareness through salons of domestic abuse and trains salon professionals to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to local resources. Salons participate by displaying posters in private areas, such as restrooms and dressing rooms, and by making safety cards available to those who need them.

“Domestic violence is a silent epidemic that cuts through social and economic barriers to affect all families,” says Marlene Bridge, NCA President. “As salon professionals, we are in a unique position to help. We see our clients on a regular basis and because of the level of intimacy we share with them, they trust us.”
If salon owners or stylists suspect that a client or colleague is being abused, they should:
  • Do keep whatever she tells you confidential. Her life may be at stake.
  • Don’t try to fix the problem or become her counselor.
  • Do suggest she contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.
  • Do display the CUT IT OUT poster in the salon’s restroom or dressing room.

To date more than 250,000 CUT IT OUT posters have been distributed. Salon owners and stylists can order the NEW FREE CUT IT OUT posters and safety cards on-line at www.cutitout.org or by calling 800-383-0210.

WHY THE SALON PROFESSIONAL?

The relationship between a client and a salon professional is usually based on trust built up over time. Because of the intimate and nurturing nature of the relationship, a salon professional—who often sees a client on a regular basis—can often spot signs of physical abuse that others may never see. A change in a client’s behavior can also be easily recognized by a salon professional.

Research shows that most battered women never call the police or go to a shelter. However, they do usually talk about the abuse with someone they trust. Because salon professionals are skilled and experienced listeners who are personally interested in their clients, many women suffering from abuse feel comfortable confiding in them—even if the abused women would never tell anyone else. In addition, because a salon is usually an all-female environment, it may be one of the few places that a battered woman is allowed to go without her abuser.

Statistics indicate that one out of every three women is abused at some time in her life. Since salon professionals each see around 200 clients every 4 to 6 weeks, they potentially are in contact with a lot of abused women. They have a unique opportunity to reach victims that domestic violence professionals may never see. With proper training to recognize abuse and to steer victims to help, salon professionals can become invaluable and influential community partners in the fight against domestic abuse./p>
